What We Heard in Lira City: Reflections from the Climate-Resilient Agriculture Dialogue 2026

Last weekend, 6th June 2026, we held the Climate-Resilient Agriculture Dialogue 2026 in Lira City.

It brought together young people, community voices, farmers, facilitators and climate actors to talk about something that is already shaping daily life in Northern Uganda: climate change and the future of agriculture.

The room was not just filled with people. It was filled with stories.
Stories of farmers trying to plant when the rains no longer come when expected. Stories of young people watching their families struggle with changing seasons. Stories of communities trying to adapt with the little information and resources available to them.

At TAL Youth Uganda, we wanted this dialogue to be more than a formal event. We wanted it to be a space where people could speak from what they know, what they have seen, and what they are already doing.

That is exactly what happened.

Participants shared openly about the challenges smallholder farmers face, from unpredictable rainfall to limited access to climate information, rising farming costs, pests, soil exhaustion and the lack of practical support for young people who want to engage in agriculture.

But the conversation did not stop at problems.

There were also ideas. Very practical ones.

Young people spoke about climate-smart farming, better access to local weather information, farmer learning groups, youth-led demonstration gardens, use of drought-tolerant crops, stronger community awareness, and the need to include more young people in local climate conversations.

One of the strongest reminders from the dialogue was this: climate action must not be designed far away from the people most affected by it.

It must come closer.

Closer to the farmer who is trying to understand why the seasons have changed. Closer to the young person who wants to farm but lacks support. Closer to the community that already has knowledge, but needs platforms, partnerships and resources to act.

Ritah Mbabazi from TAL Youth Uganda is part of the panel discussion, alongside Brenda Achan on the left and Brenda Amongi on the right, who participated in 2024 and 2026

The dialogue also reminded us that young people are not waiting for permission to lead. Many are already organising, farming, learning, testing ideas and supporting their communities in different ways. What they need are spaces where their voices are taken seriously, and their ideas can grow into action.

This is why the Climate-Resilient Agriculture Dialogue matters to us.

Through this work, TAL Youth Uganda hopes to keep creating spaces where young people can learn from one another, share local experiences, build partnerships and contribute to climate-resilient agriculture in Northern Uganda.

We are grateful to every participant, facilitator, guest, partner and team member who made the dialogue possible. Your presence, honesty and ideas gave life to the day.

We are also grateful for the support of the Youth Empowerment Fund, funded by the European Union, in partnership with Global Youth Mobilization.

Participants in a breakout session

As we move forward, we are excited to continue these conversations through our planned Climate Cafés and other community learning spaces.

The work ahead is not small.
But last weekend in Lira City reminded us that when young people, farmers and community voices sit together, something important begins.

And for us, this is only the continuation of what we have started.
